Five days in Gran Canaria is enough time to fall completely in love with the island — if you use them well.
Gran Canaria is famously called a “continent in miniature” and it earns that title. In just 1,560 square kilometres you’ll find: a bustling Spanish capital city with a 3km urban beach, Europe’s most spectacular sand dunes, ancient laurisilva cloud forest, dramatic volcanic mountain peaks, charming white villages that time forgot, and some of the best seafood restaurants in the Atlantic.
Five days. One island. Here’s how to do it perfectly.
Before You Go: Essential Planning Tips
- Best time to visit: Gran Canaria is a year-round destination. Winter (November–February) is peak season — Europeans escaping the cold. Spring (April–May) and Autumn (October–November) offer the best balance of weather, prices, and crowds.
- Getting around: Rent a car from Day 2 onwards. Las Palmas is walkable, but the rest of the island requires wheels.
- Where to base yourself: Split your stay — 2 nights in Las Palmas, 3 nights in Maspalomas. See our Where to Stay in Gran Canaria guide for hotel recommendations.

Day 1: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — City & Beach
Base: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Your first day belongs entirely to the capital — one of the most underrated cities in Europe and the perfect introduction to Gran Canaria.
Morning — Vegueta Historic Quarter
Start in Vegueta, the oldest neighbourhood in Las Palmas and one of the finest colonial historic quarters in Spain. The cobbled streets, ornate churches, and grand mansions date back to the 15th century — this is where the Spanish colonisation of the Americas was planned and launched.
Don’t miss:
- Catedral de Santa Ana — the impressive Gothic cathedral at the heart of Vegueta
- Casa de Colón (Columbus House) — the museum where Christopher Columbus stayed before his voyages to the Americas
- Mercado de Vegueta — the beautiful covered market, perfect for breakfast among locals
Afternoon — Playa de Las Canteras
After lunch, head to Playa de Las Canteras — a stunning 3km city beach consistently ranked among the best urban beaches in Europe. The protected reef (La Barra) creates calm, clear water perfect for swimming, and the promenade behind is lined with excellent restaurants and cafés.
Spend the afternoon swimming, walking the promenade, and watching the city life unfold around you.
Evening
Las Palmas has an excellent restaurant scene — far more authentic and interesting than anything in the resort south. Head to the Triana neighbourhood for dinner — lively tapas bars, fresh seafood, and local Canarian wine.

Day 2: Las Palmas & Drive South — Transition Day
Base: Las Palmas → Maspalomas
Morning — Las Palmas Markets & Neighbourhoods
Use your second morning to explore Las Palmas at a slower pace:
- Mercado Central — the city’s main covered market, full of fresh local produce
- CAAM (Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno) — excellent contemporary art museum in a beautiful Vegueta building, free entry
- Triana shopping street — Gran Canaria’s most elegant shopping boulevard
Afternoon — Scenic Drive South
Pick up your hire car and drive south — but don’t take the motorway. Take the GC-15 through the mountains via Tejeda — one of the most spectacular drives in the Canary Islands.
Stops along the way:
- Cruz de Tejeda — the geographical centre of the island, with panoramic views in every direction
- Tejeda village — a beautiful white mountain village famous for its almond sweets (try the bienmesabe)
- Roque Nublo — Gran Canaria’s most iconic landmark, a volcanic monolith rising 80m from the mountain plateau. A 45-minute walk from the car park delivers one of the island’s great views.
Evening
Arrive in Maspalomas and check into your hotel. Sunset walk along the Maspalomas Dunes promenade — the golden light on the dunes at this hour is extraordinary.

Day 3: Maspalomas Dunes & Beach Day
Base: Maspalomas
Today is your big beach and nature day — and Maspalomas delivers one of Europe’s most spectacular natural environments.
Morning — The Maspalomas Dunes
Set your alarm early and walk into the Maspalomas Dunes before the crowds arrive. The protected natural reserve covers 400 hectares of golden sand dunes that roll down to the Atlantic — a landscape that genuinely surprises people who weren’t expecting it in the Canary Islands.
Walk from the lighthouse (Faro de Maspalomas) through the dunes to the beach — about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. The silence, the scale, and the quality of the light in the early morning are remarkable.
Afternoon — Beach & Playa del Inglés

After the dunes, spend the afternoon on the beach. Playa de Maspalomas — at the southern tip of the dunes — is one of the finest beaches on the island. The water is warm, the sand is golden, and the dune backdrop is unlike any other beach in Europe.
In the late afternoon, walk or take a taxi to Playa del Inglés for a swim and some people-watching on the busy resort promenade.
Evening
Dinner at one of the seafront restaurants in Meloneras — the most upmarket corner of the south coast, with excellent dining options and a beautiful promenade.
Day 4: Hidden Beaches & Puerto de Mogán
👉 Find hotels in Maspalomas on Booking.com
Base: Maspalomas
Today you leave the resort behind and discover why Gran Canaria rewards those who explore.
Morning — Puerto de Mogán
Drive 25 minutes west to Puerto de Mogán — the prettiest town on the island and one of the most charming harbours in the Canary Islands. Flower-draped bridges cross the marina channels, colourful fishing boats bob in the harbour, and the whitewashed village climbs the hillside behind.
Have breakfast at a harbour café, walk the village streets, and browse the Friday morning market (if visiting on a Friday — the best market on the island).
Afternoon — Hidden Beaches of the West Coast
The west coast between Mogán and Agaete contains some of Gran Canaria’s most spectacular and least-visited beaches:
- Playa de Güi Güi — a remote, wild beach only accessible by boat or a 2-hour hike. Worth every step.
- Playa de Tasarte — a black sand beach in a dramatic valley, almost always empty
- Playa de Veneguera — another remote gem, accessible by dirt track
Practical tip: These beaches have no facilities — bring water, food, and sun protection. Check sea conditions before swimming.
Evening
Return to Maspalomas via the coastal road — stop in Arguineguín for fresh fish at one of the harbourside restaurants. This is where the local fishing fleet lands — the fish doesn’t get fresher.

Day 5: Mountain Villages & Farewell
Base: Maspalomas → Airport
Your final day takes you into the heart of the island — the mountain villages that most package tourists never see.
Morning — Fataga & the Valley of a Thousand Palms
Drive north from Maspalomas into the Fataga Valley — a dramatic gorge filled with Canarian palm trees (Phoenix canariensis) that locals call the “Valley of a Thousand Palms.”
The village of Fataga sits at the head of the valley — a perfectly preserved white Canarian village with a beautiful church, a couple of good restaurants, and an atmosphere of complete tranquillity. Have breakfast here and take a slow walk through the village.
Midday — Santa Lucía de Tirajana
Continue to Santa Lucía de Tirajana — another mountain village with a spectacular setting and an excellent local restaurant scene. Try the puchero canario (Canarian stew) if it’s on the menu — the definitive mountain dish of Gran Canaria.
Afternoon — Head to the Airport
Gran Canaria South Airport (LPA) is 20 minutes from Maspalomas — leave plenty of time for the return car drop-off. If your flight is late afternoon or evening, squeeze in one final swim at Maspalomas before heading to the airport.
