Coastal Canary Life

Where to Stay in Tenerife

The island of Teide, two coastlines, and a town for every kind of trip.

Here’s the honest truth about Tenerife: it’s the biggest island in the Canaries, and that’s exactly why where you stay matters more here than almost anywhere else. The sunny, beach-resort south feels like a completely different island from the green, cloud-kissed north — and picking the wrong side for your trip is the easiest mistake to make.

So here’s a simple way to think about it. The south is reliable sunshine, golden beaches and big resorts. The north is greener, cooler, more local, and usually better value. In the middle sits Mount Teide — Spain’s highest peak — which most people visit on a day trip whatever base they choose. Below, every main area broken down by who it actually suits, with real hotels worth knowing.

Good to know Tenerife has two airports — South (TFS) for the resorts and North (TFN) for Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz and La Laguna. Check which one your flight uses; it can save you an hour’s drive on arrival. And if you want to actually explore — Teide, the villages, the wild beaches — a hire car changes everything.

Hotel or apartment?

🏨

A hotel makes sense if…

  • You want everything done for you — pools, food, entertainment, kids’ clubs.
  • You’re staying a few nights and don’t want to think about meals.
  • All-inclusive matches your budget and travel style.
🏡

An apartment makes sense if…

  • You’re staying a week or more, or travelling as a family.
  • You’d like a kitchen — Tenerife’s supermarkets (Mercadona, HiperDino, Lidl) make self-catering cheap and easy.
  • You want more space, more freedom, and usually a lower nightly price.
  • You’re working remotely and need room to spread out.

Quick take Most resort areas have both, often side by side. Aparthotels are a nice middle ground — apartment space with a bit of hotel service. Each area below lists both hotel and apartment picks so you can choose what fits.

Costa Adeje

Best for families & first-timers

The island’s most upmarket strip and the easy answer for a first trip. Calm golden beaches like Playa del Duque and Fañabé, a long seafront promenade, and Siam Park — one of the best water parks in the world — right on the doorstep. Polished, walkable, very safe with kids.

Las Américas & Los Cristianos

Best for value, nightlife & easy beaches

Two neighbours with different moods. Playa de las Américas is the high-energy side — beach bars, water sports, the busiest nightlife on the island. Right next door, Los Cristianos is a former fishing town that kept its soul: a lively harbour, the wide golden Playa de las Vistas, and ferries to La Gomera. Calmer, friendlier, great for older travellers and families.

Hotels worth knowing

  • Sol Arona Tenerife — solid value near Los Cristianos beach
  • Spring Hotel Bitácora — classic family base in Las Américas

Los Gigantes

Best for quiet, cliffs & romance

Named after the giant sea cliffs that drop straight into the Atlantic — genuinely jaw-dropping. This corner (with neighbouring Puerto de Santiago and the black-sand Playa de la Arena) is quieter and more scenic than the big resorts. The launch point for whale and dolphin watching, and lovely for couples who want calm over crowds.

Hotels worth knowing

  • Barceló Santiago — adults-only, the cliff views are the whole point
  • Be Live Experience Playa La Arena — all-inclusive by the black-sand beach
  • Hotel Bahía Flamingo — relaxed mid-range base

Apartments & self-catering

  • Apartments around the marina — plenty of privately-let flats with cliff or harbour views
  • Tamaimo / Puerto de Santiago lets — quieter, better value just inland

Puerto de la Cruz

Best for authentic Tenerife & value

If you want the real island rather than a resort bubble, this is it. A historic former fishing town with a colonial old town, black-sand Playa Jardín, the Lago Martiánez lido designed by César Manrique, a botanical garden from 1788, and Loro Parque nearby. It’s greener, a little cooler, walkable, and noticeably better value. Close to Teide and the pretty Orotava valley.

Hotels worth knowing

  • Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden — the grand luxury option, famous gardens
  • H10 Tenerife Playa — well-located classic by the seafront
  • Meliá Costa Atlantis — modern 4★ right on the beach

Apartments & self-catering

  • Apartamentos Ambassador — long a top-rated pick, leafy spot near the Botanical Garden
  • Old-town apartments — the north’s best value, walkable to everything

Santa Cruz & La Laguna

Best for city life & culture

The island’s beating heart, and a brilliant base if beaches aren’t your only priority. Santa Cruz is the capital — tram, the soaring Auditorio, great shopping and one of the world’s biggest Carnivals. A short hop away, La Laguna is a UNESCO old town full of student energy and the gateway to the wild Anaga forests and Teide.

Hotels worth knowing

  • Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey — Santa Cruz’s grande-dame 5★
  • AC Hotel Tenerife by Marriott — sleek, reliable city base
  • Hotel Laguna Nivaria — characterful stay in La Laguna’s old town

Apartments & self-catering

  • City apartments in Santa Cruz — best for a local, lived-in feel near shops and tram
  • La Laguna old-town flats — student-city buzz, gateway to Anaga hikes
