Tenerife is the biggest of the Canary Islands, and the one that packs in the most. At its centre stands Mount Teide — at 3,715 metres, the highest peak in all of Spain — surrounded by a moon-like national park that draws millions of visitors a year. But the volcano is only the headline. Tenerife rewards people who move around it: the south is sun and easy beaches, the north is green, lush and far more local, and the seas in between are some of the best in Europe for spotting whales and dolphins all year round.
The contrast is the whole point. In a single day you can stand on volcanic ash near the summit, walk through ancient laurel forest dripping with mist in the Anaga mountains, and finish on a black-sand beach with a cold drink. Few islands its size offer this much variety — which is exactly why people keep coming back. Pick a starting point below.

The headline reason is Mount Teide. Spain’s highest peak rises straight out of the Atlantic, and the national park around it — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — feels like another planet, all twisted lava and ochre rock. You can drive up, take the cable car most of the way to the top, or hike it with a permit. On a clear night, it’s one of the best stargazing spots in the world.
Then there’s the weather: they call it the island of eternal spring for a reason, with warm, mild temperatures almost all year round. There’s the marine life — the waters off the southwest coast are home to resident pods of pilot whales and dolphins, making it one of the best places in Europe to see them in the wild. And there’s the green north, centred on Puerto de la Cruz and the misty Anaga forest, where the island feels older, slower and more Canarian. Add a lively food scene, historic towns like La Laguna and La Orotava, and beaches both golden and black, and you have an island that genuinely has it all.
Good to know before you go
How many days do you need?
A week is ideal — enough for Teide, a day or two in the north, some beach time and a boat trip without rushing. Five days works if you focus on one side. With ten days or more you can slow right down and explore both the sunny south and the green north properly.
South or north — which side?
The south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos) has the most reliable sun, the calmest beaches and the big resorts — best for a classic beach holiday. The north (Puerto de la Cruz) is greener, cooler and more authentically Canarian, with dramatic scenery and real towns. Many people base in the south and day-trip north.
Do you need a car?
For a pure resort holiday, no. But to see the real Tenerife — Teide, Anaga, the hidden villages and beaches — a rental car makes all the difference. The island is big and the best spots aren’t all on the bus routes.
When is the best time to visit?
Any time, honestly. The south is warm and sunny year-round, making it a superb winter-sun escape. Spring and autumn are perfect for combining beach and hiking. Summer is hot but tempered by Atlantic breezes — and the mountains are always cooler, so bring a layer for Teide.
