Coastal Canary Life · Family
Family Canary Islands
Calm beaches, easy bases and real adventures — for every age.
Let me reassure you right away: the Canaries are about as easy as a family holiday gets. The weather’s mild all year, the flights are short, the beaches are gentle, and Spanish life is genuinely kid-friendly — a toddler having dinner at 9pm is completely normal here, not something that gets you side-eye.
But the real reason families fall for these islands? There’s so much to actually do. World-class water parks, animal parks the kids will talk about for months, whales and dolphins in the wild, and beaches calm enough for the smallest paddlers. Here’s everything you need to plan it with total peace of mind.
Why parents trust the Canaries
Low crime, lifeguarded beaches in season, excellent healthcare across all islands.
About 3–4½ hours from the UK and most of Europe — kids arrive in decent shape.
Same time zone as mainland Europe, so no 2am wake-ups to negotiate.
“Eternal spring” — warm and mild in every season, even mid-winter.
Restaurants, beaches, hotels — children are part of the furniture here.
Tap water’s safe on most islands, pharmacies everywhere, English widely spoken.
The parks kids dream about
This is the big one. The Canaries — Tenerife especially — have some of the best theme and water parks in the world. Buy tickets online in advance: you skip the queue and usually pay less than at the gate.

Palmitos Park
A subtropical zoo-park in a gorgeous valley near Maspalomas — parrots, birds of prey, a butterfly house and dolphins, all in a lush natural setting.

Free Don’t miss it →Gran Canaria · Puerto de Mogán
Submarine Adventure
A real submarine dives beneath the Atlantic near Puerto de Mogán. Children can watch fish, wrecks and marine life through the portholes. One of the most unique experiences in the Canary Islands.
Unique experience Worth considering →Gran Canaria · water park
Aqualand Maspalomas
Gran Canaria’s big water park, with slides for all ages and gentler areas for little ones — an easy, splashy day out from the southern resorts.

More water parks
Smaller but fun: Aqualava and Aquapark Costa Teguise on Lanzarote, Acua Water Park in Corralejo (Fuerteventura) — perfect for a half-day cool-off.
from ~€32 See all parks →💡 Save with combo tickets: on Tenerife the Twin Ticket (Siam Park + Loro Parque) and the 2-Park pass (Aqualand + Jungle Park) let you do two parks on separate days for one better price — and you’ve usually got months to use them, so they don’t have to be back-to-back.
Animals & wildlife — the real magic
Forget the cages for a moment — the most unforgettable animal moments here happen in the wild, and they’re brilliant with kids.
All islands · year-round
Whale & dolphin watching
This is the one. The Canaries are the top spot in Europe to see whales and dolphins in the wild, all year round — nearly 30 species pass through. Boats with a hydrophone let kids actually hear them. Pure magic.
See trips →Fuerteventura
Snorkel at Isla de Lobos
A catamaran day-trip to the tiny island off Corralejo — calm bays full of fish for first-time snorkellers, with swimming and paddleboarding. A favourite with kids.
See boat trips →Tenerife · south
Jungle Park (Las Águilas)
A jungle hillside near Los Cristianos with walking trails and a genuinely impressive free-flight birds of prey show — eagles, hawks and vultures soaring overhead. Plus sea lions, penguins and big cats.
See tickets →Several islands
Camel meet-and-greets
From the volcanic slopes of Lanzarote’s Timanfaya to ranches on the bigger islands, kids love meeting (and sometimes riding) the camels. A gentle, classic island experience.
See experiences →🐬 An honest word on animals: seeing them in the wild beats any show. If you go whale or dolphin watching, choose a licensed “Barco Azul” (Blue Boat) operator — it means they follow the rules that protect the animals and keep a respectful distance. Skip anything that offers touching, hugging or riding sea creatures. It’s their home we’re visiting.
The calmest beaches for little ones
Not all beaches suit small swimmers. These are the gentle, shallow, well-equipped ones parents come back to — and a quick safety note below.
Tenerife · south
Playa de las Vistas
Los Cristianos’ wide golden beach — calm, shallow, fully serviced, with a promenade. One of the easiest with a buggy and toddlers.
Tenerife · north
Playa de las Teresitas
Golden sand near Santa Cruz, protected by a breakwater so the water stays calm — a local favourite, away from the resort crowds.
Gran Canaria · Las Palmas
Playa de las Canteras
A city beach of rare quality: a natural reef (“La Barra”) calms the waves, and the long promenade means beach and town in one afternoon.
Lanzarote · Playa Blanca
Playa Flamingo
Small, sheltered and shallow with a paved promenade right to the sand — parents with babies and twins rave about how easy it is.
Fuerteventura
Corralejo & Costa Calma
Endless soft sand for sandcastles and paddling. Just know Fuerteventura is breezy — pick a sheltered spot on windy days.
Tenerife · Costa Adeje
Playa del Duque
Calm, upmarket and well-equipped, with gentle water and good facilities — a reliable, comfortable choice for families.
🚩 Always check the flag. Green = fine, yellow = caution, red = stay out. Currents change by beach and by day, so never ignore a red flag — and with toddlers, keep eyes on them even in a few inches of water.
👨👩👧 Parent-to-parent practical tips
The sun is the real risk
Honestly the thing most likely to spoil a day. SPF 50+ for kids, reapply every 90 minutes (not just after swimming), hats and a UV suit for the little ones.
Best months for families
May, June, September and October — warm sea, pleasant air, fewer crowds. July–August is hottest and busiest; winter is mild and great value.
Eat lunch as your main meal
Look for the menú del día — a set lunch that’s far better value than dinner, and easier with hungry kids mid-afternoon.
A car helps a lot
Buses are fine between resorts, but a hire car makes beaches, parks and naps on your own schedule far easier with kids and all their gear.
Consider a villa or apartment
For a week+, self-catering with a private pool removes so much stress — nap times, fussy eaters, no hotel quiet-hours battle.
Book early, pack reef shoes
Booking ~3 months ahead in peak season can save 20–30%. Reef shoes save little feet on the rockier, volcanic shorelines.

A holiday the whole family actually enjoys
Gentle beaches for the little ones, big adventures for the older kids, and a slow, sunny pace that lets the grown-ups breathe too. The Canaries make family travel feel simple — come and see why parents keep coming back.
