Maspalomas Pride, Gran Canaria — LGBTQ+ friendly Canary Islands
Coastal Canary Life

Gay-Friendly Gran Canaria

Where to stay, where the scene lives, and how to time your trip around the island’s Pride season — from someone who lives right here in the south.

Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s most established LGBTQ+ destinations, right up there with Ibiza and Mykonos — and honestly, it has one of the biggest and friendliest scenes of the three. Almost all of it lives in the south, around Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, which happens to be my corner of the island. Year-round sunshine, golden dunes, an open and welcoming vibe, and a nightlife that never really sleeps. Here’s how to make the most of it.

🌈 The Yumbo Centre

The Yumbo Centre in Playa del Inglés is the beating heart of gay Gran Canaria — an open-air, multi-level complex that’s been the centre of the scene for around forty years. By day it’s shops and terraces; after 10pm it transforms into the island’s nightlife hub, packed with bars, clubs, drag shows and cabaret. If it’s your first trip, base yourself within walking distance of it and you’ll never need to plan a night out — you just wander down.

🏖️ The Gay Beach & the Dunes

The gay beach sits among the famous Maspalomas dunes, around beach kiosks 5 to 7. You can reach it two ways: a stroll along the shoreline (grab a taxi to Plaza del Faro, then walk east), or a short hike over the dunes straight down from Playa del Inglés. When the kiosks are open there’s usually music playing and tables with umbrellas where you can sit down for a drink, and you’ll also find sunbeds and parasols available to rent right on the sand (not always run by the kiosk itself, but set up there for beachgoers). Naturism is accepted along this stretch. It’s relaxed, international and friendly — one of those beaches where the whole day just drifts by. Kiosk opening hours can vary, so it’s still worth bringing your own water just in case.

🐾 A note if you’re bringing a dog: under the local municipal beach bylaw, dogs aren’t allowed on the official bathing beach itself, including this stretch. Leashed dogs are generally tolerated on the dune reserve’s walking paths further back from the shoreline, but not down on the sand or in the water — worth keeping in mind if you’re travelling with a pet.

🛎️ Where to Stay

Most LGBTQ+ travellers stay in one of three areas, depending on the vibe you’re after:

Playa del Inglés

Closest to the Yumbo, the nightlife and the dunes. The first choice if you want to be in the middle of it all.

Maspalomas

Quieter and more residential, with upscale resorts and easy walking access to the beach and dunes.

Meloneras

The more luxurious end, near the gay beach at Hut 7 — polished resorts, spas and seafront promenades.

Campo Internacional

Lots of bungalow complexes, a bit cheaper and a little further out — good value if you don’t mind a short taxi.

Gran Canaria has a huge range of gay-only, men-only and gay-friendly stays — from adults-only bungalow resorts with clothing-optional pools to relaxed apartments with a local host. For LGBTQ+ places to stay, I’d start with misterb&b, where every host has signed a non-discrimination charter, so you know you’re genuinely welcome:

📅 The Pride & Events Calendar 2026

Gran Canaria is a warm, welcoming and very safe place for LGBTQ+ travellers — same-sex marriage has been legal in Spain since 2005, and the south of the island has decades of history as a Pride destination.
