Coastal Canary Life
Where to Stay in Gran Canaria: Best Areas & Hotels
A “continent in miniature” — dunes, a real city, mountain villages and a base for every kind of trip.
Gran Canaria is often called a “continent in miniature”, and once you arrive you’ll see why: from the capital Las Palmas to the golden dunes of Maspalomas, from green mountain villages to wild Atlantic beaches, it packs an extraordinary variety into a small island. Which is exactly why where you stay matters more here than almost anywhere. Pick the wrong area and you’ll spend half your holiday in the car. Pick the right one and everything you want is on your doorstep.
So here’s a simple way to think about it. The south (Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico) is reliable sunshine, dunes and resorts. Las Palmas in the north is a real Spanish city with an urban beach. Mogán in the southwest is romantic and slow. The interior and Agaete are wild, green and largely untouched. Below, every main area broken down by who it actually suits, with real hotels worth knowing.
First, the 30-second version
Good to know Almost everyone flies into Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), roughly central on the east coast — Las Palmas is 20 minutes north, Maspalomas about 40 minutes south. Peak season runs November–February (the big European winter escape) and June–August — book early for the best rooms.
Hotel or apartment?
A hotel makes sense if…
- You want everything done for you — pools, food, entertainment, spa.
- You’re drawn to the big Maspalomas/Meloneras resorts, adults-only or family all-inclusive.
- You want a landmark stay — Gran Canaria has some genuinely historic and design-led hotels.
An apartment or villa makes sense if…
- You want a stone villa with a private pool in the interior — one of the island’s best-kept secrets, often cheaper per person than a hotel.
- You’re basing in Las Palmas and want to live like a local in Triana or Vegueta.
- You’d like a kitchen — Mercadona, HiperDino and Lidl make self-catering cheap and easy.
- You’re travelling as a family or group and want more space for less.
Quick take The south leans hotels-and-resorts; Las Palmas and the interior lean apartments-and-villas. Each area below lists both so you can pick what fits.

The areas, one by one
Maspalomas & Playa del Inglés
Best for first-timers & nightlife
Gran Canaria’s undisputed holiday hub, at the southern tip of the island. Home to the spectacular Maspalomas Dunes — a vast sweep of golden sand that feels more Sahara than Spain — with Playa del Inglés next door concentrating the nightlife, restaurants and resort hotels. The beating heart of the island’s tourism, with the most guaranteed sunshine. Avoid if you want an authentic local feel — this area is very touristy.
Hotels worth knowing
- Lopesan Baobab Resort — the benchmark for luxury, Africa-inspired architecture, steps from the dunes
- Hotel Faro, a Lopesan Collection Hotel — adults-only, right by the Maspalomas lighthouse
- Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa — grand scale, thalasso spa, adults-only wing
- Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas — adults-only, lush gardens, wellness centre
Apartments & self-catering
- Bungalows in Maspalomas & Playa del Inglés — hundreds of independent units with shared pools, great family value
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Best for city life & culture
The island’s capital is a genuine, vibrant Spanish city and one of the most underrated urban destinations in Europe. A stunning 3km city beach (Las Canteras), the beautiful historic quarter of Vegueta, superb restaurants and real local life that feels a world away from the resort south. Avoid if you want pure beach-and-pool with guaranteed sun — the north can be cloudier.
Hotels worth knowing
- Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel — the island’s most iconic hotel, restored colonial property since 1890, Michelin-starred restaurant
Apartments & self-catering
- Apartments in Triana or Vegueta — live the city like a local, near markets and the urban beach
Puerto Rico & Amadores
Best for families & calm water
On the southwest coast, this is the family-friendly sweet spot. The bay is sheltered, the water calm and warm, and the imported golden sand at Amadores is picture-perfect. Plenty of boat trips and excursions leave from here too. Avoid if you want a lively nightlife scene.
Hotels worth knowing
- Family-friendly resorts & aparthotels around the bay — calm, sheltered, walkable to the beach
Apartments & self-catering
- Puerto Rico & Amadores apartments — good value, close to boat trips and excursions
Mogán & Puerto de Mogán
Best for romance & slow travel
Often called the “Little Venice of Gran Canaria”, Puerto de Mogán is one of the most charming spots on the island: flower-draped bridges, a pretty marina, excellent seafood and a calm, intimate atmosphere. A favourite for couples and slow travel. Avoid if you’re travelling with teenagers or want lots of entertainment.
Hotels worth knowing
- Marina-side hotels & boutique stays — intimate, walkable, seafood on the doorstep
Apartments & self-catering
- Puerto de Mogán apartments — quiet, scenic, near the marina
Agaete & the North
Best for nature & the real island
The northwest is wild, green and largely untouched by mass tourism. The fishing village of Agaete and the dramatic Agaete Valley are genuinely beautiful — but accommodation is limited and you’ll need a car. This is the authentic, local side of the island. Avoid if you want easy resort convenience.
Hotels worth knowing
- Small guesthouses & rural hotels — Agaete stays tiny and characterful
Apartments & villas
- Private pool villas in the interior — 20–30 minutes from the sea, mountain views, real silence, often cheaper per person than a hotel
